What is SEO?

In short, SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. You may be asking, “but what does that even mean?” No worries! We will explain it to you! Essentially, SEO is optimizing your website, or improving, to make it appear higher in search results on platforms like Google and Bing! The goal of this is to get more organic website traffic, or visitors you are not paying to present yourself to.

Why is that important? There are billions of websites out there; most people are not looking past the first page of search results, so the higher you rank, the more likely you are to receive website visitors. You rank higher by having better SEO than your competitors; this can be through links, keywords, content, and so on. Search engines will crawl or index your website to determine your ranking on the SERP (search engine results page). “Crawling” a website means the search engines are using “bots” to search the web for new or updated website pages. “Indexing” a website is when the search engine bots analyze each page’s content to determine what is the most relevant. It will combine the efforts of both techniques to generate the search engine results.

In order to optimize your ranking on search engines, you have to make sure your content is relevant and keywords are present. These search engines’ main job is to ensure they are serving relevant content to users. To create relevant website content, look at the type of content, the freshness of it, location, and its topical relevance. This essentially means to ensure your pages have relevant keywords, but do not over do it. Keywords are a great place to start with SEO!
