7 Sins of Social Media

While many people assume social media is easy and that anyone can do it, that is not always the case. Social media algorithms are constantly changing; keeping up with all the updates and trends can be a lot for someone who does not specialize in the art of social media, especially if they are managing various platforms. Social media is and always will be a challenge, but it is so necessary in today’s time. To help keep you on track as you start or continue your social media journey, we have laid out the 7 sins of social media.

  1. Putting all your eggs in one basket. Unless you have a very, very niche market, it is unlikely that your entire target audience will be one platform. If your audience is on multiple social media platforms, you should be as well.

  2. Being too formal. Social media users are not looking for a scholarly article, so relax a little bit and show more personality. Yes, be professional, but always show them that your brand is built on people just like them. This gives your audience something they can relate to and makes them more likely to choose your brand when making a purchasing decision.

  3. Not keeping everything cohesive. Your website and social media should link to one another. This tactic ensures that you are not losing traffic to either one, unintentionally lowering your conversion rates, or losing revenue.

  4. Letting things run themselves. Today, there are so many automated platforms that make it easy to forget about what is happening on your social channels. Do not let these things sit too long and do their own thing; you will be missing out on critical information that you need to adjust your marketing strategy. Things can also slip through the cracks if you allow everything to be automated without checking on them.

  5. Ignoring your customers. You have to interact with users on social media platforms; otherwise, the algorithm will ignore you and not push your content forward. Even when there is negative feedback, it is so important that you respond honestly and professionally. Remember other users are watching the way you respond.

  6. Forgetting to revise and edit. Sometimes, typos get the best of us. We are all human and it happens, but as a brand it has the power to change your whole reputation. Everything you post as a brand or company is forever part of your digital marketing footprint, even if you hit “delete.” Always proofread and edit as necessary to ensure you are not the cause of your own sinking credibility.

  7. Posting with no real rhyme or reason. Just like with a business plan, you need a strategy as you approach your social media for your business. You should know who your target audience is and what platforms they are on, how you will communicate with them, the time you can invest, and so on.

As you can see, there is a lot more that goes into social media marketing than most people realize; it can be a tricky thing, but is worth the investment (both monetary and time).
